Tranquill on the Spartan radar
Earlier this week Michigan State held their annual 7-on-7 tournament. One of the teams in attendance was Athletes with Purpose from Fort Wayne, Indiana. One of the top performers on that squad was Drue Tranquill of Carroll High School. SpartanMag.com spoke with the 6-foot-2, 208-pound prospect about his recruitment.
Every year a player or two arrives at Michigan State for a session of camp or 7-on-7 and improves their recruiting stock dramatically. This year it look as if Tranquill could be that player. His performance on Wednesday caught the coaches eye and a scholarship could be forthcoming. We did a Q&A session with Tranquill.
SpartanMag.com: Your performance at Michigan State was impressive. Can you talk about the schools that have offered you a scholarship and you camp plans for the coming weeks?
Tranquill: I have offers from Cincinnati, Toledo, Bowling Green, Miami of Ohio, Eastern Michigan, and Indiana State. I should have More BCS should come by end of month. I'll be at Sound Mind Sound Body this Friday, Northwestern Sunday, Wisconsin Tuesday, and Notre Dame the following Friday.
SpartanMag.com: I see you are listed as being 6-foot-2, 208-pounds. What position do most teams see you playing at and have you done any testing as far as a 40-yard dash or vertical jump?
Tranquill: It depends on the school. Most are saying safety, but some want me as an outside linebacker/hybrid safety.
SpartanMag.com: What type of feedback did you get from thr Michigan State coaches after you finished up on Wednesday?
Tranquill: I got a great vibe from the coaches. Their coaching staff seems very interested in me as a potential "STAR" linebacker, which is their field linebacker. They liked my athleticism and how I moved around in space. They see my upside as being a guy that is big and physical enough to play in the box, but is fast enough to cover in space.
SpartanMag.com: Did you get a chance to tour the campus while at Michigan State and what were your thoughts on the program?
Tranquill: I actually didn't get to tour Michigan State, but the character of all the coaches was evident by how they interacted with myself and all the other players. I also got a chance to sneak in their stadium which is sweet! Would be rocking on gameday!
SpartanMag.com: Do you have a time frame as far as when you would like to make your decision?
Tranquill: I'll be looking to make my decision at the beginning of August, right
SpartanMag.com Take: This is a classic case of a player coming in and setting the bar high for everyone else to try and overcome. Over the next 2 weeks numerous prospects will be coming to East Lansing for a session of camp to workout with the coaches. If nobody is able to surpass the performance Tranquill had, he will have a great chance of getting an Spartan offer. In years past several players have earned their scholarships this way.
