December 5, 2012Minnesota continues to try and build depth within the program. North Dakota State College of Science and Delano native Derek Butcher recently received word that the Gophers are interested in him. Butcher talks about what he has been hearing lately.
"My coach talked to somebody on their coaching staff and he told me that they are offering me a preferred walk-on position. I have not personally talked to anyone of the Minnesota coaching staff but that is what i was told from one of my coaches."
Butcher explains what it would mean to put on the maroon and gold and play in front of his home state.
"It would mean a lot to play for my homes state," Butcher added. "I proved myself as one of the top interior defensive lineman in JUCO football this year. I was featured in the Dirty Dozen on JCGridiron and I feel like I could help out a lot. I feel like I have the ability to play at that level."
The NDSCS defensive tackle has started collecting offers and setting up official visits.
"I have three offers right now from Florida A&M, SE Louisiana, and Gardner-Webb. I am also expecting to get offered by UND and Florida Atlantic pretty soon," revealed the Delano native. "I have taken one visit to Gardner-Webb and I enjoyed it. I'm just not sure if I want to go to a private school. I have a visit planned to FAU this weekend and the weekend after I will be going to SE Louisiana."
The junior college defensive tackle will consider all schools that are showing interest.
"I have to take everything into consideration, but at this point I haven't heard from any of the staff at the U so I guess I haven't taken the offer as a preferred walk on very seriously," he explained. "The walk-on offer is in the back of my head because the Gophers are my home team and that has always been my dream, but i have to decide if it is worth giving up another school that is going to pay for all of my education."
What are the chances Butcher could walk-on at Minnesota?
"I would say less than a 50% chance as of right now, but I have not ruled Minnesota out."
