December 5, 2012Ellisville (Miss.) Jones County community college linebacker Damien Wilson was a surprise visitor to the Minnesota campus this past weekend, but could arguably be the most important one as the Gophers need for a ready to play middle linebacker in at the top of needs for the staff. Wilson talked with GopherIllustrated.com about his official visit to the Twin Cities.
"Yeah, it was kind of a last minute situation," Wilson said. "Coach Sawvel and I set up the visit early last week as it was the soonest it could work for both of our schedules. I didn't know what to expect going into the visit, but I really enjoyed my time up there."
Wilson says meeting the players and staff was the highlight of his visit.
"The whole weekend was just about having me become more comfortable with the players, the coaching staff, and the campus," Wilson explained. "I think that I accomplished all three of those things as I clicked with the players and coaches and the campus is a place where I can see myself. I had a chance to talk to my position coach Bill Miller, the defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys, and coach Jerry Kill as well. Both coach Claeys and Miller think I can fit right into their defense and make an impact right away at the mike linebacker position. Coach Kill also told me that I definitely have an offer and he'd really like for me to be a Golden Gopher."
With only a few weeks left until Wilson signs, what's next for the junior college standout?
"First off, I'd give my visit to Minnesota a "10" for sure," Wilson told GopherIllustrated.com. "I loved every aspect of my visit to the Twin Cities, Minnesota is sitting at number one on my list. I'm taking a visit to Memphis this weekend and Kansas came by yesterday and offered me, so I might visit there yet, I'm not sure. I'm not too sure when I'll make my decision yet either."
