June 16, 2013The Minnesota Golden Gophers added a commitment on Sunday afternoon from one of that nation's best tight ends. Rivals.com No. 22 tight end Gaelin Elmore gave head coach Jerry Kill his verbal commitment at TCF Bank Stadium to play for the maroon and gold. Elmore explains his decision to commit to the University of Minnesota.
"It was really the last trip to Minnesota that set them apart from the rest of the schools," Elmore explained. "On the way home I was thinking about all of the schools and I had to convince myself why I should go to the other schools. With Minnesota, I had to try to convince myself why I shouldn't go there."
Elmore had been previously considering Nebraska and Iowa State as well as Minnesota before committing to play for the Golden Gophers. He explains what big factors set Minnesota apart from the rest.
"The distance was probably the biggest thing that set Minnesota apart from the other two schools that I was considering. Coach Kill did a great job of explaining how close Minnesota is and what they have to offer. The other thing is their offense. My family and friends can come watch me play. It's only about 45 minutes away," he said. "They also have such a diverse offense at Minnesota. I can put my hand in the dirt and be a great duo with an already great tight end in Maxx Williams."
The Somerset native went down to TCF Bank Stadium on Father's Day to break the news to the Golden Gopher coaching staff.
"The recruiting coordinator Coach Glasscock was actually the only one that knew I was coming down to commit," revealed the Wisconsin tight end. "We set something up and when I got there we sat down inside the stadium with Coach Kill. He started talking with us and asked me where I was in my recruitment. That's what I told him that I wanted to commit to Minnesota. He was really happy and he told me it was the best Father's Day gift that he could ask for. Coach Reeves was really fired up and he told me the same thing."
Elmore joins Jeff Jones and Dimonic McKinzy as the third verbal on the offensive side of the ball for the 2014 recruiting class.
"I actually messaged Minnesota commitment Jeff Jones and told him this morning that I was going to commit. He said that he was really happy for me and excited to have me on board," Elmore told GopherIllustrated.com. "I am going to start recruiting for the Gophers as soon as tonight. I'm solid to Minnesota and ready to focus on my high school season."
