Martinez was one of four commitment announcements during The Opening's 7-on-7 finals broadcast on ESPNU. Earlier in the evening, three-star safety Trey Marshall from Lake City, Fla. declared he was headed to Florida State. A few hours later, Martinez became his future teammate when he announced his college choice as Florida State.
The nation's No. 10 rated offensive guard plans to be in Tallahassee in two weeks for the second session of Jimbo Fisher's Football Camp. The 6-foot-4, 290 pound prospect visited FSU multiple times before, but his relationship with Rick Trickett and the rest of the coaching staff and his comfort level that kept him coming back.
"He's a great coach. I like coach Trickett. He's strict on the players, that's something we need as big offensive linemen," Martinez told Warchant.com.
How long has Martinez known that FSU was the place for him?
It's always been kind of in the back of my head really, but after this recent season, I was kinda like, yeah, this is where I want to be at," he said. "I was comfortable with the school. My family was comfortable with me going there.
Also aiding the four-star's choice is his friendship with FSU junior James Wilder, Jr. and freshman tight end Jeremy Kerr. Like Martinez, both are from the Tampa Bay area.
"(Kerr) just tells me how comfortable and at home he is there at FSU," Martinez told Warchant.com this spring.
Martinez becomes Florida State's 17th commitment for the 2014 class and the third offensive lineman. He picked Florida State over Miami, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Tennessee and LSU.
