Visitor takes in first trip to VT
It's not just for camps the Hokies are seeing visitors roll through campus. Virginia Tech played host to a recruit who was making his first ever trip to campus yesterday. What did he think about the visit and where does he go from here? Find out more inside.
"It was awesome," St. Matthews (S.C.) Calhoun County wide receiver Mark Irick said. "The campus is amazing.
"It was my first visit and I enjoyed it."
Irick took a full tour of the school.
"We visited the engineering building and the academics team, the locker room and the weight room," he said. "Of course, the facilities were brand new, they were really nice places to be.
"I liked their stadium a lot."
Checking out the campus was just part of the 6-foot-3, 185-pounder's visit to Blacksburg since he got quite a bit of time with the coaching staff.
"It was great, I met the whole coaching staff and talked to the wide receivers coach," he said. "He told me that coming in as a freshman he said I could develop and get stronger and faster. Then, I could show my talents in the passing game."
Irick didn't just get time with Kevin Sherman, but also his recruiter, Mike O'Cain.
"I had talked to him before, so everything was comfortable."
Of course, no visit is complete without meeting head coach Frank Beamer.
"It was great to talk to him and learn about their program and standards as a player and student, he was what I expected."
The three-star prospect didn't name favorites, but mentioned he is zeroing in on a choice.
"I don't have any other visits," he said. "I'm just getting ready for the season.
"I think I'll decide before the summer ends."
Irick missed two games to injury as a junior but still recorded 38 receptions for 880-yards and 10 touchdowns.
