Sewell, Appleby Commit to Cowboys
The Cowboys picked up two commitments over the weekend when Bothell, Washington wide receiver Trent Sewell and Frisco, Texas defensive tackle Chase Appleby verballed Dave Christensen's staff after visits to the UW campus last weekend on December 10th.
The Sewell commitment should improve the speed and playmaker ability of the receiver position, while Appleby has the potential to develop into a good run stopper tackle at the college level with his 6-foot-1 and 270 size already at the high school ranks.
The 6-foot-2 and 205 pound Sewell possesses good size and athleticism, and runs a 4.4 forty-yard dash, as he received interest from top programs across the country, including initial offers from Washington, Washington State and UCLA before two of the programs went through coaching changes.
Sewell originally received an offer from the Huskies but turned down an opportunity to commit to Washington because he wanted to explore all of his options. Since then, WSU has rescinded its offer, leaving Sewell to consider his standing offers at UCLA and Wyoming.
"At the time, I didn't feel like being pressured into it," Sewell said. "I kind of wish I did do it at the time, but everything happens for a reason. I didn't want to shut any doors too early."
Christensen since his arrival in Wyoming three years ago has looked to upgrade the playmaking ability of his offensive skilled positions, especially receiver and with a good young group already in Laramie, Sewell as the potential to take the unit to another level in the future.
Sewell is ranked the eight best prospect in Washington and the 85th best prospect at his position in the nation by Rivals.com.
"During the recruiting process, I kind of learned that it was hard to really expect something," Sewell said. "I guess the best way to describe it is recruiting is just like dating. They're looking at you just as much as you're looking at them."
Sewell finished his senior year with 32 catches for 439 yards and nine touchdowns in the regular season. He had two more catches in a loss to Bethel in a Class 4A state preliminary playoff.
The Sewell and Appleby commits give the Cowboys nine verbals heading into 2012 signing day in February.
