Hawks land Texas QB

This morning, Texas quarterback Nic Shimonek found out that he had received his first major scholarship offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes. With a family connection to the state of Iowa, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound Shimonek decided there was no need to wait around and gave the Iowa coaching staff his verbal commitment before the end of the day.

"Iowa has been showing a lot of interest as far as mail and all of that good stuff and then today, when I was on my way to school, I got the news that they had called my head coach and told him they were going to offer," said Shimonek. "Obviously I was super excited, so I called Coach Davis as soon as I could and verbally accepted."

As a quarterback, Shimonek shows a strong arm which helped him throw for nearly 3,000 yards and 38 touchdowns with only three interceptions last season. He also excels at basketball and baseball at Mildred High School in Corsicana, TX, and actually just threw a no-hitter less than two weeks ago.

"I'm pretty versatile I guess you could say," said Shimonek. "In football, my sophomore and junior year, I was first team all district and my junior year I was also offensive player of the year. In basketball, I got district MVP as a sophomore and a junior. Then, in baseball, I got utility player of the year and pitcher of the year."
