Byrd is the Sooners Cure

When news broke that Hatari Byrd committed to the Sooners on July 31, it could not have come at a better time for Sooner fans. The 6-foot-1 and 190-pound safety prospect out of Fresno (Calif.) Central East made his decision the day after Oklahoma lost their commitment from four-star running back, Greg Bryant - along with a series of other tough news.

The four-star and Nation's No. 20 ranked safety had been talking about making a decision over the last month or so and had announced a top five of Cal, UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma and Notre Dame while at The Opening late last month. Despite having only visited UCLA and Cal out of that group Byrd made a surprising decision and committed to the Sooners.

"There were a lot of reasons why I committed to the Sooners," Byrd began. "What can you say? They are one of the top programs right now in the country. They have great education there. I am real close with both of the Stoops coaches and we just bonded really well. I like everything about them. Only thing negative I can say is that there isn't really a city around there but everything else I love about them."

It was during practice that Byrd decided to go ahead and call Oklahoma head coach, Bob Stoops and defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, Mike Stoops and let them know the news.

"I called coach Bob Stoops and Mike Stoops. They both had me on the phone on speaker and we talked a little bit about football and how they were going to use me and I made my commitment. We were in the middle of practice when I called them," he explained.
