'Definitely a Great Feeling'
The Minnesota Golden Gophers (5-1) picked up a nice upset victory on Nov. 23 over the 17th ranked Memphis Tigers, 84-75, in the consolation bracket of the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. Now the team waits to see who they play next as Northern Iowa plays Stanford.
Minnesota lost their only game of the season in the tournament, falling to the Duke Blue Devils, but rebounded nicely for this win. The one player the entire team rallied around was Andre Hollins, whose grandmother passed away last weekend.
Hollins scored 41 points in the win, more points than any Minnesota player had ever scored in the last 41 years. It was a big game for Hollins, who is from Memphis, making this a big win over his hometown college.
''This is definitely a great feeling,'' Hollins said with a wide smile. ''It is my hometown team. I won two state championships with a couple of the other guys on Memphis. It was a great feeling to win against guys I used to play with.''
The game pitted him against high school rivals who chose to attend Memphis. He has actually played AAU basketball with Memphis guard Chris Crawford since they were nine.
"It was hard," Hollins said. "It would've been nice to play in front of my friends and family. I was definitely considering Memphis, but I'm glad I made the right choice by going to Minnesota."
