Gophers get No. 12
Cody Poock has given Minnesota his verbal commitment. Poock talks about his decision with GopherIllustrated.com.Minnesota will add at least one player when junior college players sign their national letter of intent next week. Iowa Western Community College linebacker
"I'll be a Gopher," Poock told GopherIllustrated.com. "To be honest, for the last couple of weeks I was 50/50 on Minnesota and TCU. I didn't really know what I was going to do until I was playing some pick-up basketball and everything just kind of clicked."
The Rivals.com three-star linebacker explains the different reasons why he chose the University of Minnesota over TCU.
"The biggest reason that I decided to choose Minnesota was because of my relationship with Coach Miller. I just felt like I had a better relationship with him then the linebackers coach at TCU," he explained. "I also felt like I clicked more with the Minnesota players. They all seem pretty similar to me, a lot of guys with chips on their shoulder."
With the departure of Aaron Hill, there is an open spot at the will linebacker position. The junior college transfer will have an opportunity to start right away.
"Coach Kill and Coach Miller have both been telling me that I can come in and compete at the will linebacker position," the Iowa native said. "They told me that they aren't going to guarantee me a starting spot or anything like that, but I will have an opportunity to compete for it. I just want to help out the team in anyway possible."
Coming out of high school, Poock's best offer was a preferred walk-on offer from Iowa. He talks about how much things have changed in less than a year.
"It's all pretty surreal right now," Poock said of playing in the Big Ten. "Coming out of high school I didn't really get that many looks, but Iowa Western offered me a scholarship and I knew what kind of program they had. I knew they had helped guys get to the next level so when I had the opportunity to leave this semester they helped me do that."
Poock will have four years to play three with the Minnesota football program. The Rivals.com No. 91 junior college player in the nation is already feeling the love from Gopher fans.
"It's pretty crazy the amount of tweets that I have from Gopher fans saying stuff like "you would look good in maroon and gold," the future Golden Gopher added. "I have had people texting me pictures of Gopher stuff and saying stuff like this would look good on you. I don't even know who they are or how they got my number, but it's pretty cool. I'm excited to get started."
