Adams commits to LSU

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- LSU is known for landing outstanding defensive backs and helping them along to the NFL. Jamal Adams has taken the first step toward joining that pretty exclusive club.

The four-star safety from Lewisville (Texas) Hebron picked LSU over Florida, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M and many others Thursday at the Under Armour All-America Game at Tropicana Field.

"I felt more comfortable there," said Adams, who announced with his eight-month old niece, who was wearing an LSU dress. "Talking to the coaching staff, the opportunity is there for me. I'm ready to go win some national championships."

Adams had many other options that would have also made sense.

The 6-foot, 199-pounder is rated as the third-best safety in the 2014 class by Rivals.com and is the godson of Florida assistant coach Joker Phillips. In-state powerhouses had recruited him for a long time, but Adams said once again this week that his final three were LSU, Florida and Ole Miss.

As his recruitment continued, LSU clearly became the favorite, and the Tigers won a big coup during the Under Armour Game. Rivals.com rates Adams as the No. 35 prospect in the class and fifth in the Texas state rankings.

In considering Ole Miss, Adams said he liked the passion of the program and the great recruiting class coach Hugh Freeze put together last recruiting cycle.

Adams also was impressed with Florida's defense for a long time, especially at defensive back, and the connection to Phillips had to play a factor.

But the decision to pick LSU was multi-faceted. Adams liked the outstanding class coach Les Miles and his staff are putting together, and the history of producing phenomenal defensive backs also helped Adams with his decision.
