McElfresh accepts PWO offer
Earlier in the week, the maroon and gold added a preferred walk-on kicker. Today, they received a verbal commitment from Brainerd punter Logan McElfresh. McElfresh received offers from many in-state and nearby schools, but ultimately chose the University of Minnesota. He talks about his decision with GopherIllustrated.com.
"This last weekend I had an official visit at the U," McElfresh said. "On Friday night, we went out to dinner with the coaches and some of the players. After, we spent time with our host player which was great. My host was Peter Mortell, we got along really well which was important for me because I will be learning a lot from him and spending a lot of time around him. On Saturday, we toured the football facilities, the campus, and TCF Bank Stadium. It was an amazing experience."
While on campus this past weekend, McElfresh also had the opportunity to spend some time with head coach Jerry Kill and special team quality control assistant Jay Nunez.
"Coach Kill told me that they really liked my athletic ability, leg strength, and also that I played other positions in football. He told me that if I work hard the sky is the limit for me as a punter," the Brainerd native added. "When I was on campus, he said that he didn't want me to make any decisions until I got home and talked with my mom since she was not able to go on the visit," "The next day I called coach Nunez and told him that I knew I wanted to become a Gopher. Coach Nunez said welcome to the family and they were very excited to have me be part of the team."
There were a couple of factors that stood out to the Minnesota native that led him to accept the Golden Gophers preferred walk-on offer.
"Well, being from Minnesota it's every kids dream to be on the Gophers. I visited a couple other schools, but when I went to Minnesota I fell in love with everything about the program," McElfresh told GopherIllustrated.com. "I also really like all of the coaches, especially coach Nunez. I also got along very well with the players that I met. The biggest part was how first class the whole program is. Coach Kill is doing a great job and has hired a great staff. They also have a place where I can kick year round which was also I big factor. The facilities they have are also incredible."
