Gophers land commitment from talented DB Zaquan Bryan

Minnesota got some great news late Friday night as Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military School athlete Zaquan Bryan announced his commitment to the Gophers.

The three-star prospect, who Minnesota likes as a versatile defensive back, visited campus last weekend and chose the Gophers over the likes of Miami (Oh.), Toledo, Army, UMass, Central Michigan, and Coastal Carolina.

Bryan told TGR that he likes cornerbacks coach Paul Haynes resume and took a lot of stock in his honest approach throughout their communications.

"(He was) honest with me about their recruiting. I can learn a lot from his coaching experience and his values are on family and giving back."

That reciprocated during his visit to Minnesota last weekend when asked what stood out overall about his time on campus.

"How much the coaching staff cares about their players, from the head coach down to the equipment manager."

Bryan also liked Haynes approach during spring practice and his interaction with the players.

"(I like) how detailed coach is and all the little things he works on that other coaches overlook."

A star on both sides of the ball last season as a junior, Bryan hauled in 95 catches for 1,376 yards and 17 touchdowns as a wide receiver.

He was equally impressive at cornerback, recording 57 tackles, seven pass break-ups, and two interceptions in helping lead his team to a 13-2 record and the Class 4A state championship.

Haynes likes Bryan's abilities at defensive back and thinks he has all the tools to be a star in the Big Ten.

"I am aggressive can tackle good cover man speed and they like that I play both ways I was the leading wide receiver in Georgia Class 4A but a lot of school like me at defensive back, go figure, but I love football will play anywhere on the field."

Bryan becomes the fourth overall commitment for the Gophers in the 2023 class, joining in-state offensive linemen Jerome Williams and Reese Tripp along with Walled Lake Western (Mich.) running back Darius Taylor.
