Gophers sign three, get two verbals

The football team filled nearly all of their open scholarships made available by the
recent departure of a few players. Nate Walker, Junior Eugene, and Kyle McKenzie have signed on to play for the team this season, according to Sid Hartman today. Walker and Eugene are linebackers from Miami, and McKenzie is from Detroit. All of them were late academic qualifiers. The team may have one more scholarship available depending on

the status of Mo White.
The Gophers also received verbal commitments for 2002 from Terrell Fletcher of St. Louis Park and Eric Washington, another one from Detroit. Fletcher was listed among Minnesota’s 12 Super Preps for 2000 by the Star Tribune in February. Terrell led his team in tackles last season.
These are the earliest verbal commitments for the Gophers in a number of years. Right now the Gophers are ahead of Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Northwestern which have either one or no commitments so far. Penn State also has two commitments.
