Minnesota lost two of three to Michigan State over the weekend in their first home series of the season at Siebert Field.
Friday in game one the Gophers had a 5-1 lead through five innings only to lose a tight battle 7-6 in the end. Saturday in game two Minnesota's bats stayed hot as they put up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 10-9.
In the series finale on Sunday Minnesota took a 7-0 lead into the sixth inning but ultimately could not finish the job, dropping game three 10-7.
In their first game at Siebert Field in 692 days the Gophers put up six runs, but could not hold off the Spartans late rally. Catcher Chase Stanke was key in Minnesota's offense, going two for five with four RBI and a run scored.
Minnesota capped off their first walk-off victory since 2019 in game two on Saturday as Andrew Wilhite's three-hit day led the way in only the Gophers' second double-digit run output of the season. Reliever Tom Skoro earned the win, pitching two outs in the ninth inning including no baserunners allowed.
The series finale Sunday saw another late comeback by Michigan State as they would put up six runs in the eighth inning to overcome Minnesota's early lead. Starting pitcher Trent Schoeberl hurled five no-hit innings allowing one walk and fanning three batters in the Gophers' loss.
After another series loss Minnesota now sits at 4-14 on the season and last place in the Big Ten standings behind Purdue and Penn State. The Gophers' team batting average has risen to .245 and their team ERA is a shaky 7.57.
Minnesota will head to Iowa City next up to take on the Hawkeyes in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM CT as the Gophers will look to keep the bats hot and search for their first series win of 2021.
