Roberts plans Minnesota visits

Rice Lake (Wisc.) linebacker Austin Roberts holds early offers from Central Michigan, North Dakota, Harvard, and Yale. The 2014 prospect from just across the border is hoping that he can add an offer from the University of Minnesota. Roberts plans to be on campus to check out the maroon and gold during spring practice.
"I will be visiting the U of M on the 28th for their second practice and then on April 12th for the Friday Night Lights Scrimmage," Roberts revealed. "I found Coach Schaekel here on Facebook and got the visit for the 28th set up but I just got a letter in the mail inviting me to the scrimmage. I can't wait!"

The Minnesota basketball team added Wally Ellenson from Rice Lake in their 2012 recruiting class. Roberts is hoping to have the opportunity to be the next athlete from Rice Lake to play at the University of Minnesota.
"They really seemed interested when I went to camp last summer. I really love the school and I have spoken with Wally Ellenson, who is a freshman from my town that plays basketball and will run track, and he loves it there too," he said. "Other schools that are interested are Wyoming, Bucknell, Penn, Drake, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Iowa State, Wisconsin, and the University of Washington."
As many Gopher fans know, the Minnesota coaching staff takes summer camp evaluations very seriously. The Rice Lake product believes his camp performance impressed the staff last summer.
"Camp went really well. I knew right away it was going to be a good day when we got to put the pads on and hit. I really don't like all of these camps with just t-shirts and shorts. I killed it on the bench with 12 reps at 225. I probably stuck out the most when we did 1 on 1's with the O Line guys. That's when Coach Miller was really looking at me," Roberts told GI.com. "I talked to Coach Miller, Coach Zebrowski, and Coach Kill, but nothing about scholarships at that point. I think they really wanted to see my junior highlights first."
Roberts has already been on campus at the U on a couple of different occasions including a game last season.
"I visited for a game in the fall against New Hampshire and got to speak with Coach Schaekel. I'm pretty sure that there was scout at one of my games this season that got to watch me play against Hudson because they were following a few guys from that team. Also, after that weekend was when they invited me to the New Hampshire game," he explained. "The game was so much fun. I really loved all of the tailgating and things going on before the game, the tour of the locker room was awesome. I've never been in a locker room before a game even on my other visits and the game was great to watch. The Gophers killed them! I really had a good time."
