Mayfield is golden

Grand Rapids (Mich.) Central Catholic tackle Jalen Mayfield became Minnesota's second commit from the class of 2018 today. He chose the Gophers over offers from Cincinnati, Iowa, Michigan State, and more.

Being from Grand Rapids, Mayfield is very familiar with PJ Fleck and saw Western Michigan grow under his lead.

"I have a lot of respect for Coach Fleck and what he did at Western Michigan. He’ll do great things at Minnesota," he told The Gopher Report earlier this month. "I think the ‘row the boat’ thing was pretty cool for them being at Western Michigan. It’s been a good culture there. They built something really special (at Western Michigan)."

Fleck and wide receivers coach Matt Simon are his primary recruiters. He's also been in contact with offensive line coach Ed Warinner.

"Me and Coach Fleck talked a couple times. Coach Simon, he was our area recruiter at Western; we built kind of a relationship too. It’s a good relationship. He’s visited the school a couple times. We’ve talked a lot. They just make me feel like a priority player for them, and it just really makes me feel special. I just love the atmosphere that they have."
