Former Minnesota Golden Gopher Amir Coffey is set to begin year five of his NBA career this week. The fifth-year NBA veteran enters the 2023-2024 season as the lone former Golden Gopher in the NBA as former Gopher and former Clipper and Toronto Raptor Daniel Oturu is currently playing for Yukatel Merkezefendi of the Turkish Baskotbal Super Ligi.

This season will be interesting one to watch with the Minnetonka native as his name has been discussed in multiple trade rumors surrounding the Clippers for the last several months. In June, Coffey was reported to be part of a deal that would send him along with Marcus Morris and a draft pick to the Washington Wizards as part of a three-team trade that would've seen Kristaps Porzingis be traded to Boston and Malcom Brogdon traded to the Clippers. That trade, however, fell through and Coffey will begin the season in Los Angeles.

Coffey is coming of a 2021-2022 season in which he averaged 3.4 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game, playing in 50 of Los Angeles's 82 games and making nine starts. I was a step back from a solid 2021-2022 season for the 6-foot-7 shooting guard.

In 2021-2022, his third year in the NBA, Coffey played in 69 games and started 30 for the Clippers, averaging 9.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists across 22.7 minutes per game. This season, it is expected he reprises a similar role to the one that he ha d last year for the Clippers.

In the preseason, Coffey played in four of five games for Los Angeles, totaling 21 points in those four games including a 15-point effort against Utah on October 10. The Clippers will begin their season on Wednesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers with the game tipping off at 9:30 CT.
